Product Details

The balata tree grows quite large, about 30 – 45 metres tall. It can be planted year-round in partial shade and moist, well-drained soils. The flowers are white and are produced at the beginning of the rainy season. The tree bears fruit about 4 years after planting. The ripe fruit is a yellow berry, about 3 – 5 centimetres in diameter. The inside of the fruit which is sweet, white, soft and juicy is edible and it contains one (occasionally two) inedible seed(s). Its latex is used industrially for products such as chicle.
