Product Details

The bilimbi is an attractive tree reaching 5 – 10 metres in height. It can be planted year-round in well-drained soils. The trunk and branches of the tree have to be exposed to full sunlight for fruits to form. Trees can flower in February to April with fruits bearing two months hereafter. The fruit is elongated, measuring about 4 – 10 centimetres long. The thin, waxy skin is smooth to slightly bumpy and turns from light green to yellowish-green when ripe.. The flesh is crisp with a slightly sour taste and therefore is not typically consumed as a fresh fruit by itself. The fruit is often preserved and used as a substitute to mango when making chutneys.
