The canistel tree bears an outstanding fruit, flavourful and nutritious. Canistel, also called yellow sapote, or eggfruit due in part to the texture of the pulp being likened to the yolk of a hard-boiled egg. The flavour of the fruit is delicious and sweet and on ripening, the very smooth and glossy skin turns orange-yellow. These trees can grow up to 10 metres, requires full sunlight and have a dense spreading crown. The fruits are commonly eaten fresh or with salt, pepper and lime (chow).
