The entire Carambola fruit, better known as ‘five finger’, is edible. The fruit ripens yellow and has distinctive ridges running down its sides and when cut in a cross-section, it resembles a star. Ripe fruits taste sweet with some tanginess. Trees can be planted year-round in full sunlight and have been known to bear in 3 years. Carambola trees prefer well drained soils and can grow up to 12 metres which makes it suitable for home gardens. It can be consumed fresh or in a tasty chow and may also be used for relishes, preserves, and beverages.
