Mammey apples are sometimes referred to as ‘Mammey sapote’. The Mammey Apple tree can grow very tall to a height of 18 – 21 metres and requires little inputs for establishment. Trees can be planted prior to the rainy season for good root development. Fruits bear in 3 – 5 years, are nearly round or slightly irregular in shape with a light greyish-brown colour. It remains heavy and hard until fully ripe when it softens slightly. The flesh is orange, highly fragrant, has a smooth, creamy texture and a sweet-tangy flavour. Mammey apples are often eaten fresh.
