The pommegranate tree grows up to 10 metres high and starts bearing within 3 – 4 years after planting. Fruits can be seen on the tree through October to February. The tree has multiple spiny branches and produces attractive, bright red flowers. The skin of the fruit is reddish-purple in colour and consists of a husk and numerous seeds; can vary from 200-1,400. The seed is the part of the fruit that is utilized and can be extracted and eaten fresh or dried. They taste sweet but are still very tart. The seeds can also be compressed to extract its juices which are used to make relishes, syrups, sauces or liqueurs.
